Anton Bruckner's 3rd Symphony recorded by the Gürzenich Orchestra of Cologne, conducted by Francois Xavier Roth
Anton Bruckner's Symphony IIIin D minor: album of a single work, part of a Bruckner complete set for 2024, the 200th anniversary of the Austrian composer's birth. The disc gives us a performance of the work in a 2022 concert given by the Cologne Gurzenich Orchestra under the baton of French-born conductor Francois Xavier Roth, the orchestra's current principal conductor and also Cologne's music director until the 2025-2026 season, when Andrés Orozco-Estrada will take over that post. Francois Xavier Roth is also Principal Guest Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra and also of the Paris Philharmonic Artists' Association, and is himself the founder of a major symphony orchestra, "Les Siècles", which plays instruments characteristic of the periods covered.
As for the Gurzenich Orchestra of Cologne, the protagonist of this Bruckner album, it is one of the best German orchestras, with a history that began in 1827, the year of its foundation, and has a rich tradition to this day, including premieres of works by Johannes Brahms, Gustav Mahler and Richad Strauss. The Gurzenich Orchestra has also been associated with the name of Anton Bruckner since 1897, when the ensemble gave the first performance of the illustrious composer's Romantic Symphony IV.
Anton Bruckner's Third Symphony (also called the Wagner Symphony because of its dedication to Richard Wagner, the composer's idol) is presented on this disc in its original 1873 version, which contains quotations from Tristan and Isolde and the Ring of the Nibelung tetralogy, excluded from later versions. Fascinating music, performed with passion and skill by the Gurzenich Orchestra of Cologne under the baton of the renowned conductor Francois Xavier Roth.
