Trumpeter Andre Schoch and the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra - CD Review, 12th of January 2024
Works by Johann Wilhelm Hertel, Johann Melchior Molter, Michael Haydn and Georg Philipp Telemann.
On the 24th of November 2023, trumpeter Andre Schoch released his debut album, featuring a lesser-explored repertoire of concertante pieces by Austrian and German composers from the Classical and Baroque periods - Michael Haydn, Johann Melchior Molter, Leopold Mozart and Georg Philipp Telemann. These works reflect the spectacular way in which the trumpet developed technically and expressively during the 18th century, becoming an instrument sought after and emphasised by composers of the time, an instrument of "the sounds of the soul", as trumpeter Andre Schoch describes it.
The pieces were recorded by the German soloist with the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Suzanne von Gutzeit in the position of concertmaster.
Andre Schoch is a member of the Berlin Philharmonic and professor at the University of Music in Mannheim. As a soloist, he has performed with the Hamburg Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Kent Nagano, the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra, the Berliner Barock Solisten and the Prague Chamber Orchestra. Since 2020 he has been teaching trumpet to students at the Karajan Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic and giving master classes at prestigious institutions in Europe, Asia and North America. About his album, Andre Schoch says it includes five concerts he has been fond of since childhood, when he was studying trumpet. Although he was still too inexperienced to play them, he listened to various recordings by trumpeters who inspired him, such as Maurice Andre, Hakan Hardenberger and Matthias Höfs. So this record is the fulfilment of a childhood dream of the German musician, who chose the word Core for the album's title, meaning the soul of the sound he wants to express with his instrument, but also the fact that the works on the programme represent the essence of the trumpet repertoire.
