Violinist Hanna Hurwitz, cellist Colin Stokes and pianist Daniel Pesca - CD Review, 8th of March 2024
Florence Price - Fantasy No. 1 for violin and piano; Rebecca Clarke - Trio with piano.
Hanna Hurwitz is a young violinist from the United States who has made a name for herself promoting modern and contemporary repertoire, but she has not neglected classical compositions either. "I believe that by staying active in both new and old music, I strengthen my entire musical and interpretative approach," says Hanna Hurwitz, who is a member of the Grossman and Dal Niente contemporary music ensembles of Chicago, a lecturer at Denison University and also gives master classes, workshops and concerts on stages in Spain, Italy, Greece and the United States.
On the 16th of February, the talented violinist released a record with pianist Daniel Pesca and cellist Colin Stokes on Neuma Records - a North American label specialised in classical - modern, contemporary and experimental music. The CD entitled "The night shall break" features works written by Florence Price, Rebecca Clarke, Carlos Chavez, Olivier Messiaen and Bohuslav Martinu - scores that appeared about a century ago, during a flourishing musical period in Europe, North and South America. "By bringing together these lesser-known compositions, I hope to encourage a conversation about how being complacent about the cultural traditions we inherit can burden our understanding of an entire era and its artistic treasures," says violinist Hanna Hurwitz.
The record includes compositions created in the 1920s and 1930s, varied in musical influences, techniques and traditions, with some works based on African-American and Mexican melodies or modes, others inspired by post-romantic expression or impressionism.
