Cellist Tim Posner and The Bern Symphony Orchestra, conductor Katharina Müllner - CD Review, March 28th, 2024

A sensitive performer with impeccable technique, imbuing his instrument with a warm and vibrant sound, cellist Tim Posner won the 2023 Thierry Scherz Prize at The Sommets Musicaux Festival in Gstaad. And this month the musician released his debut recording.

The CD features compositions for cello and orchestra by Ernest Bloch, Max Bruch and Ernst von Dohnanyi, recorded at the Diaconis Kirche in Bern with the Symphony Orchestra of this Swiss city, an ensemble with a rich tradition of over 145 years.

Born in 1995, Tim Posner studied in his early years with his mother, cellist Julia Desbrulais, and later with British musician Robert Max. He continued his studies at the Hochschule für Musik in Hanvora and attended master classes held by the famous Steven Isserlis. In 2010 he founded the Teyber Trio and was recently appointed principal cellist of the Amsterdam Sinfonietta. As a soloist, Tim Posner has performed with the German Broadcasting Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal London Philharmonic Orchestra and ensemble the London Mozart Players.

The recordings on this record were made under the direction of Katharina Müllner, a 32-year-old musician who studied conducting, pedagogy and psychology in her native Vienna, and covers both symphonic and operatic repertoire, working with the Düsseldorf Opera House, the Essen Theatre, the Wuppertal and Brandenburg Symphony Orchestras, among others.
