“Paganini” ensemble Vienna - CD Review, 27th of May 2027
Nicolo Paganini - Quartets No. 11 and 13 for strings and guitar.
Niccolò Paganini, one of Italy's most representative composers and a virtuoso artist who revolutionized violin technique during the Romantic period, is the subject of the album released on the 17th of May 2024 on Dynamic Records in Genoa. The recordings were made in March 2022 at Baumgarten in Vienna by the Paganini ensemble, made up of violinist Mario Hossen, violist Marta Potulska, Liliana Kehayova on cello and Alexander Swete on guitar. This Vienna-based quartet was created to perform lesser-known compositions, especially chamber music by Niccolo Paganini. The album is the fourth in a series dedicated to Niccolò Paganini's Quartets for Strings and Guitar. The first three received positive reviews in the international press, praised for the freshness of the interpretation and the homogeneity of the Paganini ensemble, qualities that can also be admired when listening to this new album which includes Quartets No. 11 in B flat major, No. 6 in D minor and No. 13 in F major.
Niccolò Paganini's 15 quartets for guitar and strings occupy an important place in the chamber music repertoire, although they are not well known to the public. Created for close friends of the composer and for private performances in the early decades of the 19th century, these works reveal the evolution of Paganini's compositional style, from early scores influenced by the classical idiom to romantic ones characterized by richness of musical ideas, creativity and lyricism.
