Conductor Simon Rattle and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in Munich. Mahler VII - Music Box, March 17th, 2025
An album released on January 24th - Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 7, performed by the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in Munich, conducted by Simon Rattle, released by Bavarian Radio's BR Klassik Publishing.
This is the album with which Simon Rattle celebrated his 70th birthday on January 19th this year. A great conductor, who, after ending his tenure as chief conductor of the famous Berlin Philharmonic in 2018, took over as music director of the London Symphony Orchestra and then, in 2023, as chief conductor of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra.
Simon Rattle's status as a conductor needs little description, because anyone who is even remotely familiar with today's classical music world knows that the British Simon Rattle is one of the greatest orchestra conductors of our time - in fact, we have been able to hear him in Bucharest on numerous occasions at the Enescu Festival, most recently in 2023.
Throughout his career, Simon Rattle has recorded the complete symphonies of Gustav Mahler several times - with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and the Berlin Philharmonic. He is also planning a project with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in Munich, which began with the release of Symphony No. 9 in 2022 and continued with Symphonies No. 6 and now No. 7.
International reviews of the album featuring Symphony No. 7, which we are about to listen to, are enthusiastic. It is the album of the month in the symphonic music category for BBC Music Magazine, and the recording of the month of February for Gramophone magazine. International critics have referred to the exceptional technical quality of the recording, the special care taken by the sound engineers for this production, and the very vivid and detailed interpretation. At 70, Rattle seems to have reached a climax in his understanding of Mahler's music, after almost 40 years of exploring the spirit of the great post-Romantic composer; moreover, this version of Mahler's Seventh Symphony is truly one of the best available on disc today, as The Guardian notes.
A revealing listening experience, in which you will discover the extraordinary spirit of Mahler's music, blending drama and humor with irony.
