Disk of 2024
Pianist Jean Yves Thibaudet and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, conductor Gustavo Dudamel - Music Box, May 26th, 2025
An album released on February 28th, 2025, containing for the first time repertoire signed by Aram Haciaturian. The idea of this album started from the recording of a concert we very rarely have the opportunity to listen to: Concert in D flat major for piano and orchestra by Aram Haciaturian, score performed by Jean Yves Thibaudet and the Los Angeles Symphonic Orchestra, with conductor Gustavo Dudamel. On November 5th, 2023, the musicians performed this score in a season concert, and that is how what we are about to hear was born: a performance marked with 5 stars by BBC Music Magazine. Not to mention, multiple international columnists have noticed the amazing quality of this concert's performance by Haciaturian, which is barely known today, the way Thibaudet knows how to shine light on the Armenian specificity of this music, combined with the impressionist type of daintiness of a French specificity approach. This score, written in 1936, is a great discovery: vitality, but also poetry, a fresh soul for the piano repertoire approached nowadays on the big concert stages.
In 2023, when this concert was recorded, it was 45 years since Aram Haciaturian's passing, a good opportunity to probe into this Soviet-Armenian musician's musical universe, who left behind some famous opuses, like the ballets Spartacus and Gayaneh, or the Concert for Violin and Orchestra. We know a lot less about his piano works, and even less about the transcriptions for piano.
"Thibaudet does not neglect the romantic aspects of Haciaturian's music", notes the BBC Music Magazine columnist who marked this disc's performance with 5 stars. A 63-year-old French pianist, who lives in Los Angeles and is known for his versions, especially of the French repertoire; over 50 discs with the record label Decca is a relevant number for Jean Yves Thibaudet's international activity, a sensitive pianist who values musical color and relevance.
