Stradivari Quartet. Antonín Dvoűák – CD Review, 7th of November 2025
On the 7th of November 2025, the new album of the Stradivari Quartet was released. The ensemble includes Romanian-born violinist Ștefan Tarara, based in Germany, who studied with Zakhar Bron at the University of the Arts in Zurich and with Reinhard Goebel at the Mozarteum Salzburg. He won the George Enescu International Competition in 2014 and has an extensive concert career. Since 2022, he has been a member of the Stradivari Quartet, together with violinist Xiaoming Wang, violist Lech Antonio Uszynski, and cellist Maja Weber.
Founded in 2007 in Zurich, this ensemble performs on Stradivarius instruments and has appeared on major stages such as Wigmore Hall in London, Shanghai Concert Hall, and the Berlin Philharmonie. They have released six albums so far, featuring works by Schubert, Schumann, Mozart, Haydn, and Dvoűák, impressing audiences with performances full of color, emotion, and virtuosity.
The most recent addition to the ensemble's discography is the album Songs of Yearning, released by Naxos Publishing House. The CD includes works by the Romantic composer Antonín Dvoűák and the String Quartet No. 8 by contemporary Swiss composer David Philip Hefti - live concert recordings made in Zurich.
The Stradivari Quartet delivers an impressive performance of String Quartet No. 12, Op. 96 in F major, known as the American Quartet, composed by Antonín Dvoűák in 1893 during his stay in the United States, one of the most famous works in the chamber music repertoire. The piece opens with an Allegro ma non troppo, followed by a slow, melancholic movement, and concludes with two fast movements, Molto vivace and Finale Vivace ma non troppo, in which we can admire the ensemble's instrumental technique, cohesion, and expressive style.
The album also includes five pieces from Dvoűák's Cypresses collection, in the arrangement created in 1887 for string quartet. The lyricism of these works is highlighted through the sensitive, deeply romantic interpretation of the Stradivari Quartet members - violinists Xiaoming Wang and Ștefan Tarara, violist Lech Antonio Uszynski, and cellist Maja Weber.
