Violonists Oleg Kaskiv and Alexander Grytsayenko, violists Eli Karanfilova and Valentyna Pryshlyak, cellist Pablo de Naverán. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – String Quintets. CD Review – February 16th, 2026
This disc was recorded in March 2025, in Switzerland, by five internationally-renowned musicians who have impressive artistic careers both on famous concert stages and as teachers. The violonists Oleg Kaskiv, Alexander Grytsayenko, and the violist Valentyna Pryshlyak from Ukraine, the Spanish cellist Pablo de Naverán, and the Bulgarian violist Eli Karanfilova are the musicians who form an homogenous and expressive ensemble, with an elegant discourse in the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
For this album, released on January 30th, 2026, under the Claves Records label in Switzerland, the five instrumentalists chose the entirety of the string quintets written by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, thus marking the 270th anniversary of the Austrian composer's birth.
While string quartets had been tremendously developed since the 1760s, the string quintets had been, in a way, cast aside. Yet Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, at only 17 years old, discovered this musical genre upon his return from Italy and was inspired by it. Between 1773 and 1791, he composed the six quintets for two violins, two violas, and a cello, which were attractive through their gracious and lyrical sonorities.
