Cellist Andreas Brantelid - album English Cello Works. CD Review, February 27th

I present to you this album dedicated to the English Romantic and modern repertoire for cello. The CD includes chamber and concert works by Edward Elgar, John Ireland and Frank Bridge, performed by Andreas Brantelid, a cellist with a strong artistic personality and charisma, one of the most successful artists in Scandinavia and the winner of the Grand Prize at the Carl Nielsen International Competition in 2015. The musician, born in 1987 in Copenhagen into a mixed Danish-Swedish family, has appeared as a soloist with prestigious orchestras and has released twelve albums so far featuring works from the classical, romantic and modern repertoire. The most recent is this disc bringing together compositions by British composers.

The most substantial work on the album is the Cello Concerto in E minor, Op. 85, written in 1919 by Sir Edward Elgar. It is one of the emblematic scores of the cello repertoire, a piece in which the soloistAndreas Brantelid displayshis extraordinary qualities, impeccable technique, musicality, passionate style and interpretative virtuosity. The artist recorded the work during a concert in August 2021 together with the Royal Danish Orchestra, conducted by Thomas Søndergård.

This disc also includes three chamber pieces recorded by Andreas Brantelid at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Frederiksberg, together with the experienced pianist Bengt Forsberg, one of the most respected Swedish musicians and a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music. He has built a distinguished career in chambermusic and has collaborated with mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter and violinists Ellen Nisbeth and Nils Erik Sparf.

The album English Cello Works, recordedin Denmark, was released by the Naxos label.
