Violinist Midori. Works by Clara Schumann and Robert Schumann. CD Review - March 18th

In the presentation text of her new album, featuring works by Clara and Robert Schumann, violinist Midori writes: "In preparing this recording, I sought not only to honor the historical and musical context of these works, but also to share with listeners the deeply human aspects of Schumann's late creations: their inner nature, turbulence, and moments of fragile hope. From Clara's simple lyricism to Robert's lyrical introspection and folk-inspired humor, alongside a profound emotional breadth, this repertoire offers both a human and a musical journey."

The album, recorded in May 2025 in Berlin and released by Pentatone, includes Robert Schumann's Violin Concerto in D minor, recorded with the Festival Strings Lucerne ensemble conducted by Daniel Dodds, as well as chamber pieces performed together with the renowned American pianist of Turkish origin, Özgür Aydin, winner in 1997 of the ARD Competition in Munich and the Nippon Music Award in Tokyo. Currently based in Berlin, Özgür Aydin maintains an active concert career and is a piano professor at the Berlin University of the Arts. The two performers - Midori and Özgür Aydin - highlight the delicate melodic lines, melancholic spirit, and refined nuances of the works by Clara and Robert Schumann.

The protagonist of this album, Midori, is one of the most renowned violinists in the world, with numerous prestigious awards and an impressive career. Born in 1971 in Osaka and now based in the United States, Midori has performed since childhood on the world's most famous stages. She is also deeply involved in charitable projects supporting the musical education of talented children and serves as a professor at the Juilliard School in New York, the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, and as artistic director of the Piano and Strings program at the Ravinia Steans Music Institute. Her extensive discography reflects the breadth of her repertoire, the most recent addition being this album of chamber and concert works by Clara and Robert Schumann. The largest work on the recording is the Violin Concerto in D minor, composed in 1853, one of Robert Schumann's final major creations. Midori notes that she approached this score at a mature stage in her career, after having become familiar in her youth with the Romantic violin concertos by Tchaikovsky, Sibelius, Bruch, and Brahms.

"Schumann's concert is a work you fall in love with, though perhaps not immediately. It is a comforting composition, especially for mature listeners who respond to the depth, subtlety, and turbulence of this music," says Midori. With impeccable technique, interpretative finesse, and expressive strength, she brings out the distinctive features of Robert Schumann's Violin Concerto in D minor. In this recording, she is accompanied by the outstanding Festival Strings Lucerne ensemble, led by Australian conductor Daniel Dodds, the orchestra's artistic director since 2012.
