Café Zimmermann ensemble, conducted by Pablo Valetti, Works by Antonio Vivaldi. CD Review – March 26th
This disc explores various musical genres from the prolific output of Italian composer Antonio Vivaldi: vocal-instrumental and orchestral pieces, excerpts from operas, sacred works, and concertos dedicated to the flute, horn, and violin. The performances are given by the renowned French baroque Café Zimmermann ensemble, founded in 1999 by violinist Pablo Valetti and harpsichordist Céline Frisch.
The ensemble's new album was released on the16th of January, 2026, by Alpha Classics, in collaboration with four soloists, countertenor Paul Antoine Bénos Djian, flutist Karel Valter, and horn players Alexandre Zanetta and Félix Polet. The violin concertos included on the disc feature soloist Pablo Valetti, the very musician who leads the Café Zimmermann ensemble as concertmaster. He studied at the Schola Cantorum in Basel and collaborated with early music orchestras such as Les Arts Florissants, Le Concert des Nations, Concerto Köln, and the Baroque Orchestra of Seville. He is a professor at Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya in Barcelona and at the Conservatory in Nice and performs on an invaluable Guadagnini instrument built in 1758.
The Café Zimmermann ensemble, founded 27 years ago in Aix-en-Provence, takes the name from the Zimmermann Coffee House in Leipzig, a historic building that hosted memorable performances in the 18th century, including the first concert dedicated to Johann Sebastian Bach's Coffee Cantata. The Café Zimmermann ensemble performs on period instruments, frequently appears in prestigious concert halls across Europe, and has an extensive discography including works by Vivaldi, Geminiani, Biber, Lully, Bach, and Mozart.
