Clarinettist Jean Johnson and pianist Steven Osborne – CD Review, April 28th, 2026
Gustav Jenner - Sonata in G Major, Op. 5; Robert Schumann - Three Romances, Op. 94
Premiere album, released on March 6th
This album was recorded by clarinettist Jean Johnson and her husband, pianist Steven Osborne. It is the duo's second recording together, following their 2014 album featuring works by Johannes Brahms, and the first CD they have released with the Scottish label Linn Records. The new release is likewise connected to Brahms's musical world, bringing together Romantic works by composers who were linked, in one way or another, to the great German master: Gustav Jenner, Brahms's student, and Clara and Robert Schumann, his friends and mentors. The program concludes with Carl Maria von Weber's Grand Duo Concertant for Clarinet and Piano, a work greatly admired by Johannes Brahms.
Described by Fanfare magazine as "a phenomenal clarinettist," Jean Johnson, of British and American background, enjoys a distinguished international performing career. She has appeared on stages such as Carnegie Hall, the Concertgebouw, Wigmore Hall, and the Palais des Beaux-Arts. A member of the Metamorphoses ensemble, she collaborates regularly with the Scottish pianist Steven Osborne, who teaches at the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Widely regarded as one of Britain's foremost musicians, Steven Osborne won the Clara Haskil International Piano Competition in 1991 and has built an outstanding concert career alongside an extensive discography. His recordings have received numerous distinctions, including awards from BBC Music Magazine, Gramophone, Choc Classica, and the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik.
