The Helsinki Philharmonic, conducted by Jukka-Pekka Saraste – Jean Sibelius’ seven symphonies, CD Review, 20th and 21st June
Jean Sibelius' symphonies had a decisive role in the career of Jukka-Pekka Saraste. The Fourth Symphony was one of the works that determined the Finnish musician to pursue a career in the conducting field, at a time, in his youth, when he was studying the violin. In 1981 he won first prize at the Nordic Conducting Competition with a performance of Sibelius; nine years later, he recorded the complete cycle of these symphonies, leading the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra to extraordinary success. In 2022, Jukka-Pekka Saraste was appointed chief conductor of the Helsinki Philharmonic and launched a new recording project, that being a complete cycle of Jean Sibelius's symphonies, this time for the label Ondine Records - an exemptional collection that showcases the conductor's ample experience, his stature as a consummate musician, having reached peak artistic maturity. He imbues the Helsinki Orchestra with captivating sonorities and a deeply romantic and expressive musical narrative.
These symphonies, created by Jean Sibelius between 1898 and 1924, reflects the prolific romantic composer's incredible evolution. Besides the fact that he reimagined the structure of orchestral creation at the beginning of the 20th century, he was the first composer that gave Finland its own musical language, distinct from the dominating German tradition of the time. Jean Sibelius became an iconic figure for his county's national culture, the composer's symphonies being approached by the great orchestras of Finland over the last century. And the Helsinki Philharmonic, one of the oldest and most prestigious musical institutions of Northen Europe, founded in 1882, premiered a majority of these symphonies and it has made a tradition out of interpreting Jean Sibelius' music, taking it to a new level through this project under the direction of Jukka Pekka Saraste.
The finnish conductor notes in the album's liner notes that "Finnish conductors and orchestras have a unique experience and a deep understanding of interpreting these symphonies. Paavo Berglund, Leif Segerstam, Okko Kamu și Jukka Pekka Saraste were the primary conductors of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Helsinki Philharmonic, passing on their knowledge in regards to how Jean Sibelius' symphonies should be interpreted." Jukka Pekka Saraste confesses that he got details from conductor Jussi Jalas, Jean Sibelius' son-in-law, about directions the composer offered to musicians after rehearsals and concerts regarding tempos and style. Thus, this new recording is directly connected to Jean Sibelius's symphonic vision, making the album particularly compelling to listen to.
The collection includes three CDs with studio and live recordings, recorded between 2024 and 2026 at the Helsinki Musical Centre.
