Gustav Mahler - Symphony No. 3 - Music Box, 25th of May 2026
An album released on May 22nd by the French label Harmonia Mundi: Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 3, recorded during a concert held at the Royal Albert Hall in London on April 27th, 2023. The performance features the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London, the Philharmonia Choir, the Tiffin Boys' Choir, mezzo-soprano Hanna Lip as soloist, and conductor Vasily Petrenko leading this large-scale ensemble.
This is an exceptional-quality recording of a work that holds a unique place in the history of music, and I would say, of humanity. Because in the Third Symphony, composed at the end of the 19th century, Mahler searches for answers to some of the questions we also ask ourselves, in a different context today, in the 21st century: what does it mean to be human? What is the meaning of human life? And the answer unfolds through the most expansive symphony ever written in the history of humankind: a six-movement work lasting anywhere between 90 minutes and almost 2 hours without interruption, depending on the interpretation. The music reveals not only the perfection of its form but also the vastness of its emotion, underscored by the titles of the 6 movements: Pan Awakes, What the Flowers in the Meadow Tell Me, What the Animals in the Forest Tell Me, What Man Tells Me, What the Angels Tell Me, culminating in one of the most uplifting pieces of music ever written - What Love Tells Me.
I believe the great merit of Vasily Petrenko, who is one of the preeminent conductors of our time and the current music director of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London - is that he gives Mahler's music room to breathe: his version has a special physicality, a high vibration that moves one deeply, even through a recording. I wonder how great the impact must have been for the audience who attended this concert. In fact, I believe that an exceptional performance retains its power to reach the listener even in a recording.
Yes, especially the final part of this symphony is a great prayer, that of a man in despair before destiny, who finds solace. It is about love - for love is the vibration that sets the world in motion, the love that reunites all of us, together. In an age of division, this music shows us that paradise means simply being able to live together, loving one another as we love ourselves. It reminds us that to be human means still being able to resonate and weep, touched by a great masterpiece created by one of our own kind, as is Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 3, in a masterful interpretation.
