Cellist Emmanuelle Bertrand and pianist Pascal Amoyel. Franz Schubert - CD Review, June 3rd, 2026
Franz Schubert - Im Frühling; An den Mond; Nacht und Träume; Sonata D 821 in A minor "Arpeggione".
Premiere album, released on April 10th
With her new album, French cellist Emmanuelle Bertrand explores chamber works from the late period of composer Franz Schubert: Lieder and the Arpeggione Sonata transcribed for cello and piano, recorded alongside Pascal Amoyel; the piece Litanei auf das Fest Aller Seelen; and the String Quintet in C major, D 956, the latter two works recorded in collaboration with the Parisii Quartet from France.
Regarding this double album, recorded in France, cellist Emmanuelle Bertrand notes: "I conceived the program as an expansive musical journey involving two of Schubert's masterpieces - the Arpeggione Sonata and the String Quintet - along with a selection of Lieder, whose concision captures the quintessence of Schubert's musical language. I often have the intuitive sense that these songs open a passage between two worlds; just a few notes are enough to vividly transport us to that 'other place.' Each of these Lieder creates its own separate world: the love of art, of nature, tenderness for a loved one, palpable nocturnal tension, or the universality of the hymn 'Ave Maria'."
Emmanuelle Bertrand, 52, studied under Jean Deplace and Philippe Muller. She received career mentorship from renowned composer Henri Dutilleux and boasts an extensive discography in partnership with pianist Pascal Amoyel, a concert soloist, composer, and professor at the Rueil-Malmaison Conservatory. The two musicians frequently perform recitals together on prestigious stages and have earned honours including the Diapason d'Or, Choc du Monde de la Musique, and the Cannes Classical Music Award for their recordings of exceptional quality.
