Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle live from Munich

Monday, 18 March 2024 , ora 11.26

From the 2023 - 2024 season, he is the new chief conductor of the Bavarian Broadcasting ensembles. Simon Rattle is a musician familiar with German orchestras, having been Principal Conductor and Artistic Director of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra for over 16 years since 2002, and the British conductor has decided to continue living in Berlin, a city he feels is more suitable for his family, even though he has been at the helm of the London Symphony Orchestra for five years.

As per usual, the Bavarian ensemble performs at the Royal Palace in Munich. It's the musical universe of Bavaria's capital, and in the middle of the residence is the 'Herkulessaal', an architectural gem with some of the best acoustics around. It is one of the most expensive halls ever built, entirely paved with marble and decorated with gold-plated bronze ornaments. All of the Royal Palace's ceilings are painted throughout, and the one in the concert hall embodies the 'Apotheosis of Hercules'.

The Bavarian Broadcasting Orchestra of Munich is an ensemble with an outstanding European reputation and a history that began in 1949. And to celebrate its 75th anniversary and the first year of the British maestro at the helm, the Bavarian Broadcasting Orchestra has commissioned a piece for its world premiere. The piece is 'Aquifer', written especially for this event by one of Britain's most sought-after composers - Thomas Adès.

Sir Simon Rattle's musical versatility, compelling charisma and love of experimentation are well known and will be reflected in the programme for the evening of March 15th. A work in first performance, set in a cleverly woven programme that also includes two masterpieces of the classical repertoire: the Prelude and Death of Isolde from Richard Wagner's 'Tristan and Isolde' and Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony VI Op. 68 in F major 'Pastorale'.

On March 15th, you can listen to this concert live on Radio România Muzical during its broadcasting of the European Stage, at 9 pm.
