Conductor Jonathan Berman and pianist Daniel Ciobanu, in a concert with audience at the Romanian Athenaeum on November 4th and 5th

Monday, 1 November 2021 , ora 14.10

On Thursday, November 4th and Friday, November 5th, 2021, the George Enescu Philharmonic is organizing, from 7 pm, a symphonic concert conducted by the British conductor Jonathan Berman, with 30% of the capacity of the Romanian Athenaeum's Great Hall. Daniel Ciobanu, the Philharmonic's first artist-in-residence, will perform Gerald Finzi'sEclogue for piano and string orchestra and Frédéric Chopin's Andante spianato and Marea polonaise, op. 22 on the Philharmonic's new Steinway piano. In the opening, the orchestra will perform the Elegiaminacciosa by the well-known Romanian composer Dan Dediu, while the second part of the concert will feature Franz Schubert's Symphony No. 5 in B flat major, D 485.

"I am very happy that the concerts of the George Enescu Philharmonic season have resumed and that it is possible for us musicians to resonate with an audience present in the hall, not in front of the screens. The programme proposed this time during my residency at the Philharmonic comes after a number of unforeseen changes, particularly after the imposition, due to pandemic restrictions, of a reduced number of orchestra members on stage. So, I'll be appearing in the first part with the piece Eclogue, written by the British Gerald Finzi, a delightful work for piano and string orchestra, which brings to the fore the fragile state we all find ourselves in when faced with nature continuing its course in spite of people forced to remain locked in their personal cages. When we overcome this stormy episode of the pandemic, we will perhaps remember that we are temporary guests and not masters of the surrounding nature", says pianist Daniel Ciobanu.

"The next work on the programme, Frédéric Chopin's Andante spianato and MareaPolonezã is brilliant, composed with a youthful spirit at the age of 26 by the great Polish composer. After the serenity and absoluteness found in the simplicity of the Andante, the MareaPolonezã invites us to dance and manifests the joy of living life to the full, while retaining a certain elegance both outwardly and inwardly. I look forward to the audience joining us on this spiritual journey, which opens up a more optimistic horizon towards the next period through different poses," says the Philharmonic's first artist in residence.
