'George Enescu Day'on Radio Romania Music

Thursday, 30 April 2015 , ora 15.15

On 4th May, 1955, there are 60 years since the death of the one who remains the greatest Romanian musician of all time: George Enescu. A creative genius, a worldwide violinist, the beloved teacher of one of the most important violinists of the 20th century - Yehudi Menhuin, among others - creator of the modern Romanian school of composition, a role model for future generations, an interpreter who played in the ditches of the First World War and one of the cultural symbols of Romania, a genius: this was George Enescu and Radio Romania Music will pay an homage to him by having a special programme on the day of his death.

On Monday, 4th May, between 10:00 and 17:00, the George Enescu Day is on Radio Romania Music. You can listen to one of his most important works, among them being excerpts from the opera Oedipe, Symphonies I and III, Sonata No.3 "in a popular Romanian character" for piano and violin and the Romanian Rhapsody No.1 Op. 11, interpreted in a remarkable way. Also, there will be some moments recorded by the violinist George Enescu - the master while playing, among others, the Concerto for Two Violins and Orchestra by Bach, in a recording made with Yehudi Menuhin.

During the Enescu Day on Radio Romania Music there will be moments when the voice of Enescu himself can be listened - talking about the experience of composing the Oedipe opera and about his opinion on playing the violin, among others: it is a privilege to hear, over the years, the confessions of a great Man, of a modesty and spirituality that today can but only impress.

The musical selection for the Enescu Day on Radio Romania Music was made by Monica Cengher. The two sections of the Enescu Day are presented by Ioana Marghita and Lucian Haralambie.
