Eberhard Weber and Tom Harrell - Jazzy Hour, December 17th, 2015

Wednesday, 9 December 2015 , ora 13.57

Despite his health issues, due to a stroke suffered in 2007, the bass player Eberhard Weber has achieved the impossible, going on to produce albums which gravitate around the distinctive tone of his instrument and his music. He has not used his instrument per se, but managed to preserve the uniqueness of his own personal style, which has influenced generations of musicians. Ten years since the tribute dedicated to him on his 65th birthday, the event "Hommage à Eberhard Weber" takes place once more, without him on stage, but with an impressive show of friends, work partners, musicians with whom Weber had memorable encounters, creating a style, an institution that contemporary music brings to the fore. Eberhard Weber's presence will be felt throughout the pieces, and the great musicians who have come together on this occasion will create a musical spectacle full of class and emotion. Here is the line-up: Pat Metheny - guitar, Jan Garbarek - saxophone, Gary Burton -vibraphone, Paul McCandless - oboe and saxophone, Scott Colley - double bass, Danny Gottlieb - drums, and SWR Big Band, conducted by Helge Sunde and Mike Gibbs. Weber's pieces have been reorchestrated, and although the guest soloists bring their own personal touch, his style remains dominant, as the personality of each player blends into the whole to honour the great musician.

In the second part we listen to Tom Harrell, a melodic genius, the brilliant composer who remains consistent through every show with his fascinating style. This time, his lyricism takes shape in the music of the Impressionists, who are a great inspiration and influence for him. Together with an ensemble of nine musicians, Harrell performs pieces by Ravel, Debussy, blurring the lines between jazz and classical music. His warm, polished, enchanting sound, as well as his unparalleled, sophisticated harmonic rhythm style, shine through on this 2015 album called "First Impressions." His music is intelligent, accessible, fresh and soulful. The trumpeter and composer expertly links complex harmonies with innovative rhythms and unforgettable melodies, using the entire colour range to its fullest.
