28 years of Radio România Muzical – Alexandru Tomescu and the magic of Bach at St. Joseph’s Cathedral in the capital
Yesterday, the 24th of March, 2025, Radio Romania Muzical celebrated 28 years since the first day of broadcasting, and this celebration of our station was marked by an extraordinary recital given by violinist Alexandru Tomescu, who, in an interview, said that for him, Radio România Muzical means the air he breathes. The recital was hosted by St. Joseph's Cathedral in Bucharest. From Johann Sebastian Bach's works, Alexandru Tomescu performed Suites Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 6 for solo cello, transcribed for violin by Werner Icking, demonstrating once again why he is one of the most appreciated violinists on the Romanian scene.
In the presentation made by Cristina Comandașu, manager of Radio România Muzical, the audience discovered both important moments in the history of our station and future projects that are about to take shape.
Together with my colleagues, I am preparing Romania's participation in the meeting of classical music specialists at the European Broadcasting Union. The Radio România Muzical programme My meditation space by Liviu Pețu will be presented in the panel dedicated to classical music and psychology, an idea I proposed in the EBU music group I belong to. On the 10th of June, the cellist Jan Sekaci, beneficiary of the Heirs of Musical Romania 2024, our project and Rotary Club Pipera's, will give a recital at Sala Radio with pianist Daria Tudor. In the meantime, until the 6th of June, we will choose the scholarship holder of the year 2025. Jan Sekaci is also making studio recordings at Sala Radio between the 7th-10th of July. This will be followed by the Enescu Festival, then in early October by the official signing of the agreement between the ICMA jury and the "Transylvania" Philharmonic in Cluj on the organization of the ICMA Gala in 2027, for the first time in Romania, at the initiative of Radio România Muzical.
At the end of the recital we had a chat with those present:
Lawyer Vasile Deleanu: Impeccable event. Congratulations to Cristina Comandașu and Alexandru Tomescu. It couldn't have been better, more beautiful and I'm glad that I was able to be with Radio Romania Muzical, and do the best I could as I could together with my team of lawyers, I'm glad that it led me to this moment. A unique event. Congratulations Radio România Muzical!
Dan Popescu- member delegate Rotary Club Pipera: Exceptional recital, as usual. Maestro Tomescu always delights us, somehow the place inspires you, but it seems that over all this history and mystery, Maestro Tomescu has a phenomenal grace. Congratulations and Happy Birthday to the whole team of journalists, specialists and technicians, all of you who make and bring us these beautiful words sung or these luminous spirits in our homes, in our cars, wherever we listen to you. Congratulations and Happy Birthday, Radio România Muzical!
The Radio România Muzical anniversary was not only a moment of celebration, but also a confirmation of the importance of our station in promoting quality classical music. Here's how this anniversary event was perceived by the public:
- Wonderful. I came after work and relaxed listening to the music of Alexandru Tomescu. Happy birthday, here's to more and more beautiful shows.
- It is important to have events like this, which are also free, where we can all meet. It was beautiful.
- I am always impressed by Alexandru Tomescu's concerts and I am very pleased to have listened to him this evening here in St. Joseph's Cathedral. Classical music is very important in everyone's life.
- It was very interesting and very enjoyable. I wish that it will always be in people's souls, that it will always be present and that we will be blessed by listening.
- A delight. I confess that I came here expecting a special moment which I really experienced. To watch a virtuoso with the ease with which the bow moves the strings. It was quite something. I enjoyed it and thank you very much for giving me the opportunity to say a few words about what I experienced this evening.
- I remember when Radio România Muzical was founded. It has been part of my life all these years, daily, I could say. In a way I grew up with it. I was really young when it was founded and it means a lot to me, so I wish Radio Romania Muzical all the best. Alexandru Tomescu, I couldn't help remembering Bach to Basics, also here, in this cathedral, which was a landmark moment. May he continue to have the strength to transmit and to delight souls and ease them.
- It was an exceptional recital in an exceptional venue. We all enjoyed it. Maestro Tomescu's violin warmed our souls. Everything he conveyed was heavenly and divine and for that we thank you and Happy Birthday.
Here are other impressions taken by our colleague, Cristina Cîrjan:
It was very moving, a very special occasion and the space offered by the cathedral, very beautiful, an absolutely moving evening.
