Live from Lugano: Lorenzo Viotti conducts the concert of the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana
We return, over the airwaves, to Lugano for a new concert by the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana at the multifunctional center Arte e Cultura-dedicated to music, visual arts, and performance.
On April 23rd, Lorenzo Viotti leads the ensemble in a program conceived by Charles Dutoit, a concert that, unfortunately, the legendary conductor can no longer conduct. Thus, the program features two composers who were probably among Dutoit's most beloved-Ravel and Beethoven alongside Alban Berg, with the selected works having a strong elegiac character. The soloist is German violinist Veronika Eberle.
Principal guest conductor of the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, designated Music Director of the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra (from the 2026-2027 season), and designated General Music
Director of the Zurich Opera (from 2028-2029), Swiss conductor Lorenzo Viotti is one of the artists who has risen to prominence in recent years, conquering major stages worldwide. His popularity continues to grow, this summer he will conduct the iconic nighttime concert performed by the Vienna Philharmonic in the gardens of Schönbrunn Palace.
The symphonic works in Thursday evening's program are Le tombeau de Couperin (The Tomb of Couperin) Suite by Maurice Ravel and Symphony No. 4, Op. 60 in B-flat major by Ludwig van Beethoven.
Between these comes Alban Berg's Violin Concerto "To the Memory of an Angel," featuring Veronika Eberle as soloist. Performing on a 1693 "Ries" Stradivarius violin, generously loaned by the Reinhold Würth Musikstiftung Foundation, Veronika Eberle will present Alban Berg's final completed score, dedicated to Manon Gropius-the daughter of Alma Mahler and architect Walter Gropius-who died of poliomyelitis at the age of 18.
We invite you on Thursday, April 23rd, at 9:00 PM, during the program European Stage on Radio România Muzical, to listen live from Lugano to a concert that promises to be of the highest caliber. Our station is the only one in the European Broadcasting Union network to broadcast it live.
