Interview with conductor Simona Strungaru

Friday, 26 January 2024 , ora 13.08

The title of the concert that the Big Band of Radio Romania will perform on Thursday, January 25th at Sala Radio is "The Magic of Swing". With this occasion, Simona Strungaru, the conductor of the ensemble spoke to our interviewer, Ioana Țintea.

Mrs. Stungaru, for the 25th of January you want to bring before the public a concert titles The Magic of Swing, which will take us to the world of dancing together with the Big Band Radio. What is the specific element of the swing rhytm?

The specific element of swing is the emphasis on strokes, which are not usually strong in music. If we imagine and count to four, and this is repeating, in swing, the 2 and 4 strokes are strongly emphasized, giving you a feeling of balance and a need to dance. Additionally, it's about the articulation of the musical notes and values, which is somewhat "swaying", if you can say it that way.

I would kindly ask you to tell us more about the evening's program. Which piese are going to be performed?

We have an attractive repertoire with well-known piece which rhytm is, as I previously siad, very special. We have Alright, Okay, You Win, we have Sing, Sing, Sing, which is an iconic piece for this style. We have Big Apple Contest, Sipsy Doodle. These are pieces which are going to be accompained by specific choreographies, realized by the ones from Jazz Roots Bucharest.

With this occasion, this will be the third collaboration with Jazz Roots Bucharest?

With the Radio Big Band, yes. It is the third collaboration.

What will the atmosphere be like at the concert?

It will be a festive atmosphere. This is a concert we wanted to hold during this time of the year, as we thought it's a bit more monotonous outside, and people have already celebrated the holidays. We bring back the joy of celebrating music to Sala Radio, where everyone will surely get into our game, into our choreography.
