The centenary of the Union of Romanian Composers and Musicologists, celebrated by the 'George Enescu' Philharmonic Orchestra

Wednesday, 28 October 2020 , ora 14.46

The "George Enescu" Philharmonic Orchestra celebrates the centenary of the Union of Romanian Composers and Musicologists with a tribute concert.

In the autumn of 1920, at the headquarters of the Bucharest Conservatory, the Society of Romanian Composers was established, George Enescu being named its president. To mark the celebration of the centenary of the society, which became the Union of Romanian Composers and Musicologists, the "George Enescu" Philharmonic Orchestra presents a concert with recordings of Romanian music, which were performed at the Romanian Athenaeum on Thursday, October 29th, 2020, from 7 P.M. The first two songs in the program, Adrian Enescu - Mircea Suite, the Wise Old Man and Anatol Vieru- The Concert for Two Cellos and Orchestra are taken from the concerts hosted by the "George Enescu" Philharmonic Orchestra within the International New Music Week (2018 and 2015 editions), already a year-round tradition at the end of May. The last song, The Symphonic Poem Actaeon belongs to Alfred Alessandrescu, one of the founding members of the Society of Romanian Composers who signed the birth certificate of the Society on November 2nd, 1920.

Founded at the initiative of Constantin Brăiloiu (who acted as general secretary for almost a quarter of a century), George Enescu (president of the Society until leaving the country), Mihail Jora and others, the Society of Romanian Composers (later the Union of Composers) contributed essentially to encouraging the creation and study of Romanian music, by organizing concerts, making acquisitions and other specific actions in order to promote contemporary composers, but also by founding the Archive of folklore, the Music magazine, the Music Publishing House.
