The Natural Horn - the ‘star’ of Thursday's concert at the Sibiu Philharmonic!

Thursday, 20 May 2021 , ora 9.09

One of the most interesting musical instruments, the Natural Horn, will resound on Thursday, May 20th, 2021 in a concert scheduled at the Sibiu Philharmonic. With a powerful history dating back to the Roman Empire, the Natural Horn is rarely used in modern concerts. The public from Sibiu gets the unique opportunity to listen to this instrument in the interpretation of hornist Antonio Mihail.

Concerto for horn and orchestra in E major by Francesco Antonio Rosetti is the piece interpreted by the Sibiu Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by maestro Horia Andreescu, together with hornist Antonio Mihail and his Natural Horn. "The Natural Horn was first used by the French and then improved by the German master manufacturers. The instrument I will play on Thursday was made in the 20th century by a Romanian manufacturer in Italy, using German models from the 18th century", mentioned hornist Antonio Mihail.

The horn was at its base an instrument used in hunting, and then included in the occasional reproduction of hunting scenes in ballet operas and performances of the Renaissance. However, once it was placed next to the other musical instruments, some changes had to be made. Over the years, its dimensions got smaller, tuning slides appeared and it got a more qualitative sound, becoming what we call today the NATURAL HORN.

"The Natural Horn is an old instrument, a relic-instrument, an instrument that is only rarely played, although it has a distinctive sound. It is the ancestor of the modern horn. All wind instruments of today are equipped with some sort of keys, through which the sound pitch is modified. This instrument doesn't have keys, and the sound is formed through the blowing technique and through an incredible gymnastics of the right hand inside the "funnel", stated Sorin Petrescu, doctor in musicology.

Also on Thursday, within the concert at the Thalia Hall, the public will listen to Symphony no. 2 by Robert Schumann.

The tickets for this concert are on sale at the Sibiu Philharmonic Box Office and online on iabilet.ro. The price of a ticket is 30 or 40 lei. More information on 0734466486. It is mandatory that the public wear a face mask during the concert. In order to comply with the sanitary rules in force, only 145 tickets were put on sale, the spectators will have their temperature measured and each of them will have to disinfect their hands at the entrance.
