A very musical bourgeois gentleman on the stage of the Romanian Athenaeum

Wednesday, 2 June 2021 , ora 16.04

"George Enescu" Philharmonic announces that on Monday, May 31st, from 12.00, the tickets for the symphonic concert with the public will be on sale on Thursday, 10 and Friday, June 11th, 2021, in which the "George Enescu" Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra will be led by Gabriel Bebeșelea, its main conductor for the 2020/21 season. The program of the concert on June 10 and 11 is based on a unitary concept, being composed of selections from the original music composed by Jean-Baptiste Lully for the song The Gentleman Bourgeois by Molière and the Suite The Gentleman Bourgeois by Richard Strauss.

As early as 2015, on the 300th anniversary of the death of Louis XIV, Gabriel Bebeșelea undertook diligent research into the music of Jean-Baptiste Lully, the musical master of the French Court during the "King of the Sun" period. . The conductor highlights Lully's music, after several years of complex research and transcription of manuscripts, as well as selection of works. At the "George Enescu" Philharmonic, the music of the gentleman Bourgeois will be offered to music lovers in a unique composition, performed by Gabriel Bebeșelea, music lovers who we look forward to again in the concert hall, after the Romanian Athenaeum reopened its doors for the public. For the new concerts with the public scheduled until the end of the season, the capacity of the Romanian Athenaeum hall can be occupied in proportion of 50%.

The orchestral suite The Bourgeois Gentleman (Der BürgeralsEdelmann in German) by Richard Strauss was first performed in Vienna in 1920. Like Lully, who collaborated with Molière, Strauss composed the music for the adaptation by Hugo von Hofmannsthal ( librettist of many of Strauss's works) after the famous piece written by Molière, and from the initial 16 musical sections, Strauss extracted 9, developing an independent instrumental work. Of these, some are directly inspired by Lully's creation, in the neoclassical spirit of the early twentieth century, so that between the two works there is a connection not only conjunctural, but also musical.
