Gabriel Bebeșelea brings ‘The Bourgeois Gentleman’ on the stage of the Romanian Athenaeum

Wednesday, 9 June 2021 , ora 15.21

On Thursday and Friday, June 10th and 11th 2021, the Symphony Orchestra of the "George Enescu'' Philharmonic will be conducted by Gabriel Bebeșelea, its principal conductor in the 2020/21 season. The program of the concert on the 10th and 11th of June consists of selections from the original music composed by Jean-Baptiste Lully for the piece Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme by Molière and from the Suite Der Bürger als Edelmann by Richard Strauss.

"The concept of the concerts on June 10th and 11th is concentrated on one of the most well-known comedies in world literature: The Bourgeois Gentleman by Molière. The first work is the suite from the original stage music composed in 1670 by the person to whom we owe the invention of the modern orchestra, the Sun King's composer - Jean-Baptiste Lully. Alongside Molière, he produced plenty of pieces that changed the direction of theater, music and ballet, but The Bourgeois Gentleman remains the jewel of the collaboration between the two", acknowledged Gabriel Bebeșelea.

"The second work is inspired by the first, having the same title. This time, Lully and Molière were the source of inspiration for Richard Strauss and his librettist, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, and they managed not only to quote from the primary work, but also to create a new paradigm by reinventing the piece from the perspective of the early 20th century. The public from Bucharest will have the opportunity to meet the "George Enescu" Philharmonic in two unique circumstances, modeled on the style of each piece and highlighting the virtuosity and the talent of the famous ensemble. Moreover, under the dome of the Athenaeum we can find the perfect acoustics for both pieces, even if the stylistic antagonism is obvious", emphasized Gabriel Bebeșelea.

For the new concerts with public scheduled until the end of the season the hall of the Athenaeum can be occupied up to 50%.
