Lieder recital with baritone Liviu Holender

Thursday, 4 May 2023 , ora 13.02

In 2018, thanks to his performances at the National Opera as Count Almaviva in Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro and also as Silvio in Leoncavallo's Pagliacci, baritone Liviu Holender left a lasting impression on the audience of Bucharest. The young baritone returned to Bucharest after being invited by George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra for two concerts conducted by Leo Hussain, performing Stabat Mater op. 53 by Szymanwski. Given this occasion, he was offered the opportunity to conduct a lieder recital at the Romania Athenaeum. On March 18th, in a hall where the acoustic is ideal for a lied recital, a Liviu Holender chose to perform together with pianist Juliette Journaux lieder composed by Franz Schubert, Johannes Brahms, Richard Strauss, Gustav Mahler and Maurice Ravel.

Liviu Holender is a baritone with a promising career, already with a debut at the Scala Theatre in Milano, under the guidance of Zubin Mehta, and another debut at the Maggie Musicale Fiorentino festival, conducted by Daniele Gatti. The artist was born in Vienna, but he's always been in touch with the Romanian language and the land of birth of his father, Ioan Holender. The young baritone discovered early on his passion for the opera world as a member of the state opera's music school in Vienna. Ever since 2019, he's been a soloist at the Opera house in Frankfurt, where he performed as Count Almaviva in The Marriage of Figaro and as Masetto in Don Giovanni, as well as other secondary roles in Rigoletto, Tristan and Isolde and Carmen.

This year, Liviu Holender is taking part in the projects of the Orsay-Royaumont Academy in Paris; he has a scholarship at the Heidelberg Lied Academy, under Thomas Hampson's guidance. He met Juliette Journaux in Paris, saying about her: "She's a young concert pianist. We met at a canto academy in Paris, where we studied together three years ago and ever since we've performed recitals together at the Paris Philharmonic, in the Orsay Museum's Auditorium and at the Radio France Musique, and now we're keeping our collaboration in Bucharest at the Athenaeum." We see Juliette Journaux as maestro at the Comic Opera, Opéra de Rouen, the Aix-en-Provence Festival and Tiroler Festival in Austria. You can listen to the May 18th, 2023 recital recording, which took place at the Romanian Athenaeum, on Thursday, May 4th, at 7 pm, during the transmission of the Radio Romania Muzical Concerts.
