Reportage of the "Callas 100" Gala

Thursday, 14 December 2023 , ora 10.26

On the occasion of this event, the audience was able to listen to Maria Callas' famous pieces from her repertoire. Sopranos Aida Pascu, Daria Lupu, mezzo-soprano Camelia Cuzub, tenors Andrei Petre and Mihai Urzicana, baritone Alin Munteanu and bass Alexandru Matei performed as soloists with the National Radio Orchestra, conducted by Ciprian Teodorașcu. The Maria Callas Gala was also delighted with the Radio Academic Choir`s participation, conducted by Ciprian Țuțu.

On the screens in the foyer of the Radio Hall, was running a virtual exhibition of costumes inspired by Maria Callas' outfits, made by young Romanian creators, including the scenographer Iulia Vișenescu: "Together with my colleagues Ilinca Oprina, Daria Panait, Bianca Panait, Mara Mihai, Eliza Marian and Caliopi Chiriacescu, we are happy that we could be part of this wonderful project and that we could perform in the foyer of the Radio Hall. I can say that it is a huge opportunity for me and I am glad to be part of this project. Being able to commemorate such a musician is such an honour. She was a magnificent presence and I'm glad that I was able to illustrate that through drawings to the people who come to the concert."

Throughout the evening, soprano Aida Pascu sensitively brought to life arias such as that of the titular character from Francesco Cilea's Adriana Lecouvreur, Vissi d'arte - the aria of Floria Tosca from Giacomo Puccini's opera or Casta diva - the aria of Norma from Vincenzo Bellini's opera with the same name.

Soprano Aida Pascu: "I was delighted to have the honour of participating in this event in honour of the great soprano Maria Callas. The repertoire that has been chosen is also very beautiful and musically expressive, and for me it is of course a great pleasure to sing and at the same time a great responsibility to sing famous arias that Maria Callas also performed."

At the end of the concert, we gathered some reactions from the public:

Soprano and teacher Georgeta Stoleriu: "I was happy to see so many young people here. They are not only promising, but already confirmed not only by this evening, but even before this event. It was a very well-balanced evening... everything from top to bottom - the orchestra, the choir, all the soloists. I really enjoyed watching the concert!"

Ovidiu Fugaru, psychologist: "I am very happy with this initiative to create a Maria Callas - Celebration of the 100th anniversary concert. I'm a big Maria Callas fan and although I didn't know much about this show initially, I am discovering some famous arias performed by some young people and this makes me think that the world will surely not forget Callas."

Diana Fieraru, student: "All these young soloists are very talented and you can see that they work very hard. I'm glad that we have the opportunity to see them live and to enjoy their amazing work, which they fully show us."

Her Excellency Sofia Gramatta, Ambassador of Greece in Bucharest: "This is an important day for the Greek Embassy. This event is absolutely wonderful and means a lot to our Greek community in Romania. Thank you to the Romanian Radio for organizing this event and for commemorating our great soprano Maria Callas!"
