Gautier Capuçon and Dalia Stasevska - romanticism and modernism with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra

Monday, 4 March 2024 , ora 12.12

National schools are still a fascinating concept for musicologists: starting from the second half of the 19th century, in most European countries that started to assert their national identity - first through revolutions, then through cultural efforts - similar trends regarding the stylistic could be noticed - ideal associations that the composers of those countries made, over the generations. Whether we are talking about reactionary attitudes or traditionalist thinkers, the fact is that creative spirits in the musical field could be grouped in so-called "national schools" in many European countries where professional composition art was just beginning to establish itself. Two eloquent examples in this sense are the romantic Antonín Dvoøák and the modern Jean Sibelius, the two musicians considered representative of the national schools in their native countries, being also two composers appreciated for the coherence and expressiveness proven in opuses that have become famous.

In recent decades, Gautier Capuçon has become one of the most appreciated cellists in the international music world - we will be able to listen to this French artist on Thursday, March 7th, on the frequencies of our station, in direct transmission from Copenhagen, where he will perform the Concerto op . 104 in B minor for cello and orchestra by Antonín Dvoøák. This well-known score of romantic cello music will be performed by Gautier Capuçon with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra.

The conductor of the evening will be Dalia Stasevska, a relatively new presence on international stages - at least compared to Gautier Capuçon. In 2018, Dalia Stasevska made her debut with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra at the Nobel Prize Gala. Last year, in 2023, she was named "Personality of the Year" by BBC Music Magazine.

In the second part of the broadcast, we will be able to listen to a work created by Jean Sibelius: Symphony No. 5 op. 82 in E flat major. Among the symphonic titles that the Finnish composer signed throughout his life, this page stands under a very special aegis, being commissioned by the government of the musician's native country, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of his birth. He noted about the score that we will be able to listen to: "It was as if God the Father was throwing mosaic pieces from the edge of heaven and asking me to figure out what the pattern is."

So, romantic and modern music, on Radio România Muzical, Thursday, March 7th, from 20:30, live from Copenhagen, in a concert that brings together first-rate artists and works of the highest quality.
