The ‘Johannes Passion’ Oratory by Johann Sebastian Bach interpreted by the Netherlands’s Broadcasting Choir and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra

Thursday, 14 March 2024 , ora 11.24

On Sunday, the 24th of March around 15:15, you'll have the opportunity to listen to the 'Johannes Passion' Oratory by Johann Sebastian Bach, a very beautiful and dramatic sheet music inspired by, of course, the Saviour's sufferings, by Jesus's Passions exactly as described by John the Evangelist.

Bach, who has a vast religious knowledge, made this work of major size - it lasts up to two hours - after he became a chorister at the Saint Thomas Church in Leipzig, and the first version of his work was performed on the Good Friday in 1724.

'Johannes Passion', a work forgotten after Bach's death and brought back to the public's attention by Felix Mendelssohn in 1833, is not based on a libretto, but on a few fragments from John's Gospel translated in German by Martin Luther.

Radio România Muzical will broadcast live the concert held by the Netherlands's Broadcasting Choir and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam under the baton of Trevor Pinnock, where you will listen to the 'Johannes Passion' Oratory by Johann Sebastian Bach. The soloists will be the tenor Mauro Peter as the Evangelist, the bass will be Matthew Rose as Jesus, the soprano will be Lauryn Bend¾iūnaitė, the contralto Wiebke Lehmkuhl, the tenor Anthony Gregory and the bass Johannes Weisser.

On its birthday, Radio România Muzical broadcasts a live-event, which will be held on one of the world's emblematic concert halls, on Palm Sunday, to the catholic believers who will celebrate Easter on the 31st of March this year.

Enjoy!
