Werther de Jules Massenet, LIVE from the Teatro alla Scala in Milan

Monday, 10 June 2024 , ora 10.52

We've known it for a long time... Love stories in opera aren't always happy. When Goethe published his "Werther's Sorrows", the story of the beautiful Charlotte and her lover was so successful that it sparked what was called "Wertherian fever", causing young people ready to do anything to imitate the romantic heroes to commit suicide.

More than a century later, at the height of French Romanticism, Massenet was inspired by the story of this impossible love and signed his most important work with it. Using the resources of the great symphony orchestra, he creates an intimate and penetrating atmosphere. It is best illustrated by the wonderful aria "Pourquoi me réveiller, ô souffle du printemps...", "an opera hit", Massenet's most beautiful writing.

Benjamin Bernheim and Victoria Karkacheva will play the unfortunate lovers in the new production at the Teatro allaScala in Milan, surrounded by a cast of three French singers: Jean-Sébastien Bou, Marc Scoffoni, Rodolphe Briand, joined by Armando Noguera, Enric Martínez-Castignani and Francesca Pia Vitale. The new production at the Teatro allaScala, in collaboration with the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, marks the debut of French conductor Alain Altinoglu at the Milan theatre. His name is linked to outstanding musical interpretations and thrilling performances. Christof Loy, the show's director, is distinguished by his intelligence, taste and theatrical intuition, having been invited to major theatres and festivals around the world: from Paris to London to Salzburg. The collaboration between Alain Altinoglu and Christof Loy promises an exciting and artistically demanding production of Werther at La Scala in Milan.

Audiences and press alike look forward to an impressive musical performance and sensitive staging that fully expresses the emotional and dramatic facets of the story.

Don't miss this version of Werther at Milan's Teatro alla Scala, broadcasted live on Monday, the 10th of June 2024 on the European Stage at 21:00.
