About music and life with tenor ION PISO
A voice admired across many continents.
A performer deeply committed to expressive nuance, passionate about the many facets of the roles he performed, relying not only on vocal technique, but also on the dramatic development of his characters.
An artist with a broad horizon, open to vastly different fields.
A remarkable figure who left his mark as a tenor on major stages in Europe, America, and even Asia, and then later embarked on another significant career path, crowned by a PhD in Musicology earned at the age of 71 and by scholarly essays analysing the artistic phenomenon from both intellectual and scientific perspectives, essays which are highly regarded internationally.
This is the general image most people have of tenor Ion Piso. However, the program series "About music and life", built around conversations with maestro Piso, also offers a chance to revisit various operarecordings made decades ago by the artist born in the Brașov region. For many younger music lovers, it may even be an opportunity... to discover the depth of this artist through outstanding interpretative moments that shine both musically and in terms of technical recording quality.
Over the years, life and professional encounters have granted me the joy and honour of meeting extraordinary personalities, people whose biographies have traversed vast cultural landscapes and continents, who have lived through decades of sweeping change while preserving clarity of mind and spirit, generosity of speech, and the emotion of simply being, of giving something to others.
This spring of 2025, I had the honour of adding tenor Ion Piso to the gallery of remarkable individuals I've met over the years.Just days away from turning 97 (on April 26th, 2025), he graciously welcomed me into his home for a conversation. With my microphone in hand, I gathered not only memories, but also reflections on interpretative principles, music, and the world of performance, which were shared with remarkable clarity, at times shaded by a bittersweet smile, and always touched with a refined sense of humour, revealing yet another facet of his culture and intellect.
It was the first time we had spoken, and I sought to learn as much as possible about this multifaceted artist - singer, researcher, and musicologist - widely known and recognized across the global music scene.I came across numerous fascinating articles and interviews.Yet the vividness of the maestro's own storytelling - events so fresh in his memory - his accounts of "realities" unfamiliar to many in younger generations, and his frequent moments of self-irony made me completely lose track of time during the hours spent in his company.
What the "About music and life with tenor Ion Piso" series offers is a true radio "documentary"(subjectively shaped through dialogue, but grounded in the objective substance of archival musical recordings). The "About music and life with tenor Ion Piso" series begins on Radio România Muzical on Tuesday, May 6th, at 7:00 PM (with a rebroadcast on Saturday at 1:00 PM).
