Interview with violinist Radu Chișu, the director of the Royal Camerata

Monday, 15 April 2024 , ora 15.12

This Sunday, on the stage of the Romanian Athenaeum, Radu Chișu, the founder and director of the Royal Camerata will be performing as soloist for the Orchestra alongside pianist Andrei Licareț, with TiberiuSoare at the conductor's desk. The program includes Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy's Concerto for Piano, Violin and Strings in D minor and two works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Divertimento in D major K. 136 and Symphony No. 40 in G minor.

The evening's program contains works signed by child prodigies, by geniuses who have shined in the world history of music-Mozart and Mendelssohn. How did you choose these particular works?

Everybody loves Mozart's music and we absolutely love performing his works whenever we get the chance. It's the kind of music that stirs up feelings in people that are so pure and so useful for the society we live in.

Mendelssohn, who can be considered a child prodigy, wrote this concerto for piano and violin when he was only 14 years old, believe it or not. It's an absolutely incredible concerto! It gives you that touching feeling that we are young, that everything is going to be okay, that we have our whole lives ahead of us, that we are ready to embark on our journey. It's a wonderful work that I really enjoy performing every time.

How do you feel about performing as soloist for the ensemble you're directing that you founded almost 15 years ago?

I have to confess that the most difficult thing is performing in front of people you know very well. Of course, the expectations are quite high, considering the fact that I am a rather perfectionist instrumentalist and I ask all the members of the orchestra to do the best they can during rehearsals and so they must be expecting the same thing from me. A lot of artists would agree that the hardest part is performing at home.

How would you describe your collaborations with pianist Andrei Licare
țand conductor TiberiuSoare?

I've known Andrei for a very long time. We are really good friends. It's not our first time working together. We've even performed this concert together in other cities. It's a really nice collaboration. We experience such great feelings when we're rehearsing together and this type of music naturally steers us in this direction. We do chamber music together, we even have ongoing projects. In one of them we handle all of Johannes Brahms's chamber music with piano. Our next recital will take place in June.

I esteem TiberiuSoare very much and we've wanted to invited him to the Royal Season for a very long time. Although the Royal Camerata Orchestra has collaborated with maestro TiberiuSoare many times before, this is the first time we have the opportunity of inviting him to the Royal Season at the Romanian Athenaeum, the one organised by us.

What's next for the Royal Camerata?

The next concert will be on the 10th of June. This year in February we've started a project called "This is the Royal Camerata"-a series of concerts through which we wish to present Camerata's instrumentalists, because there are really valuable instrumentalists within the orchestra whom we want to show off.

There's a special offer going on for the concert on April 14th - a two-for-one deal. You can find the tickets on bilete.ro and on eventim.
