Interview with Costin Roșu, founder and organizer of the Jazz Syndicate Festival

Monday, 18 November 2024 , ora 11.44

We conclude the Romanian Jazz Society section with information about the Jazz Syndicate Festival, an event that kicks off tonight at the Bragadiru Palace. The festival's headliner is trumpeter Avishai Cohen, but there will be many other attractions. We'll learn more from the founder and organizer of the Jazz Syndicate Festival, Costin Roșu, who is now with us on Radio România Muzical. Welcome!

Thank you for having me.

We have an international festival in Bucharest, which will kick off with a "rising star," a young talent. Can you tell us more about who will perform tonight?

It's about Ovidiu Gurban, who will be accompanied by a remarkable rhythm section-the rhythm section of the renowned saxophonist Baptiste Herbin. Ovidiu Gurban is a 19-year-old and is likely to become the next big name in Romanian jazz. He's a saxophonist and clarinetist who already plays, as they say in jazz terms, like the greats and shows great promise.

Jazz fans will see him at Bragadiru Palace today at 7:00 PM.

The gates open at 7:00 PM, and the concert will start at 7:30 PM.

On the second evening, the star will be trumpeter Avishai Cohen. This is his second time participating in the Jazz Syndicate Festival.

Indeed, it's trumpeter Avishai Cohen, who has become something of a resident at the festival. We also organize standalone concerts, and this might be the fifth or sixth time he has delighted us with his music in Romania. He will premiere his latest album, Ashes to Gold, in Romania, which references the socio-geopolitical situation in his home country. We are well aware of what's happening there, and it's likely his hope for humanity-namely, that we will return to better, golden times.

The music was written directly under the impression of these events, from what I've read online.

Yes. As an interesting detail, last year when he performed at our festival, he asked me to find him a practice room with a piano. He wrote the first piece for the album right here in Bucharest and performed it during the festival as a world premiere.

Tomorrow evening, alongside Avishai Cohen, a Romanian band recently returned from an international tour will also perform.

This festival, beyond the joy of music, is also a mission for us. For example, on the third evening, we have Sorin Zlat, who is a patriarch of jazz in Romania. However, 10-15 years ago, when we started organizing this concert series, he was also a promising young artist, and now he has proven himself.

Regarding Friday evening, Amphitrio will perform.

Yes.

On the final night of the festival, in addition to Sorin Zlat, whom you've already mentioned with his Chick Corea Elektric Band Tribute, we also have a band from Italy. Can you tell us more about them?

It's saxophonist Gianni Vancini, who will be accompanied by a very interesting vocalist, Silvia Losappio. He is a smooth jazz saxophonist and has performed with various artists in the genre, such as Dave Koz. His concert will have a Mediterranean vibe, leaning slightly into an electric style, but still within the smooth jazz domain.
