Interview with Andrei Voica

Monday, 9 December 2024 , ora 11.43

Diximus& The Space Nebula is a new Romanian jazz band, featuring Andrei Voica (vibraphone), Oscar Ungvari - electric guitar, Laszlo Sandor - bass and Frankie Ercsei - drums.

Diximus& The Space Nebula from Cluj will perform next Thursday. Founded this year, the band has also released an album Floating Thoughts. We dispel some of the nebula surrounding this new band with one of its members, vibraphonist Andrei Voica. Welcome.

Good afternoon, thank you for having me.

You are a new band. How did you come together, what motivated you to create this modern jazz band, as you define it?

Long time ago I had the idea of creating a band to play our own original music. Last winter we decided it was the right time. I didn't know the other band members, only the drummer, Frankie. Through Frankie I discovered some other very good musicians, the bass player Laszlo and Oscar on electric guitar. We started with our own songs, we had a couple of pieces that we worked on together, we wrote some new songs, and that's how we composed the songs for the album.

You work in Cluj-Napoca. According to the names of your colleagues, almost all of you are from Transylvania. What else can you tell us about the background of the members of the band, how old are you, where did you play before?

I started with classical music, I started with piano in Sighișoara, I'm from Sighișoara. Then, after a while, from the sixth grade I moved to percussion instruments and since then I started to like marimba and vibraphone more than drums, so to say. After finishing college in Timișoara, I left the country where I had a couple of gigs and tours. Coming back to Romania I did a master's degree and started this band. I also played classical music, but somehow, I turned to jazz music, because it gives me more freedom and that's very important for me. Frankie also started with classical music, in Târgu Mureș, then he moved to Cluj for university, but like me, he also felt a greater attraction to jazz music. Laszlo also started with classical music, as far as I know, with the clarinet.

He's readjusted to bass.

Bass guitar. I can tell he's self-taught. Oscar didn't start with classical music. He's self-taught, plays several instruments, but he enjoys electric guitar the most.

From what I've seen on Facebook, you were born around 1990-1991, not exactly recent graduates, but not with a long-term career either. You have another concert scheduled for this year. Where will it take place, in Târgu Mureș, organizational details.

We will be at Dome's Pub in Târgu Mureș, near the city center, on December 12th, at 7 pm.
