Interview with Sandra Ecobescu, president of the “Calea Victoriei” Foundation

Tuesday, 25 March 2025 , ora 13.40

How was the "From Bach to Mozart" concert programme designed and how did you intend it to convey the second part of the title, "The Sound of Beauty"?

The programme of the spring concert organized by the "Calea Victoriei" Foundation was conceived together with conductor Tiberiu Soare, concertmaster Monica Apostolache and our guest, violinist Rafael Butaru.

We conceptualized it as a musical journey into baroque music, so that the event's attendants would witness the acoustic transformation of the music of Bach, Vivaldi and other great composers, to the well-known Mozart and the sounds we're much more familiar with from classical music.

Every time he develops a program, Tiberiu Soare makes sure to combine well-known pieces with lesser-known pieces, to add an educational aspect. Before the concert, he'll talk about the chosen musical moments and he'll say a few words about each composer and maybe what they meant for each geographical zone, if we're talking about Luly, Rameau, French baroque, Italian baroque or British baroque.

Do you think that this educational aspect, which is always included in the Foundation's events, is a key element for endearing classical music to younger audiences?

It's a fact that the story element is very attractive, because most of the concert-going public may have certain preconceptions about classical music and how accessible it can be if our parents haven't been taking us to concerts since we were young or if we haven't studied an instrument. So this introductive part and presentations that Tiberiu Soare makes probably encouragesan appetite for knowledege, as there are some musical fragments that the audience may be hearing for the first time at one of our concerts that they'd then look up on their own later.

What's important about this concert? Two volumes that we published years ago with Tiberiu Soare will be republished, "Nouă povești muzicale" (Nine musical stories), a sort of history of classical music from the Baroque period until the current era and the second volume, "Pentru ce mergem la operă?" (What do we go to the opera for?), in which Tiberiu Soare analyzes various famous operas and ballets.

About the books published by the "Calea Victoriei" Foundation together with conductor Tiberiu Soare, "Pentru ce mergem la operă?" and "Nouă povești muzicale", can we expect a similar new project in the future?

Yes. We held a series of conferences with Tiberiu Soare, two years ago, and now we're transcribing the conferences and working on the third volume that we're going to publish. It will most likely be published sometime at the beginning of 2026. Perhaps we might even release this third volume to the public together with the New Year Concert.

At the end of the concert, the audience is encouraged to engage in discussions with the evening's artists. How will this dialogue take place?

We have a very cozy foyer, where we can socialize at the end of the concert, at Sala "Luceafărul". We can enjoy a glass of wine and socialize there. Tiberiu Soare will, naturally, be offering autographs on the two volumes. We'll also bring in the concertmaster, part of the orchestra and, of course, violinist Rafael Butaru, like we always do, to meet the public, to discuss, to make it a social area and, why not, take photos that will become beautiful mementos of the evening.
