Interview with saxophonist Cătălin Milea

Monday, 17 November 2025 , ora 14.26

Saxophonist Cătălin Milea will be performing tomorrow evening at 7 p.m. at the Bucharest Jazz Club, part of the jazz season at the Goethe Institute in the capital. He will be playing songs from his album Tetrismatic together with the quartet that produced the material. We are now talking to Cătălin Milea about the event at the Goethe Institute, as well as his other projects. First of all, what can you tell us about Friday evening's concert at the Goethe Institute, the musicians you will be playing with, and the program?

I am very excited to have this opportunity to perform again in Bucharest with this Tetrismatic project, which brings to the audience a more unique style of jazz, because we do not necessarily play from a score, but rather create music in the moment. It is dynamic, spontaneous music, with all kinds of unique moments, and it is cinematic music, I could say, because we like to believe that our listeners are taken on a journey, both sonic and visual, if they want to see us in action, in the moments when we move from one sound structure to another. It is built on very short ideas, on motifs, and it is like a game in which we play a kind of ping-pong with musical ideas.

The formula is similar to the one on the album, but not quite identical. It's an important change.

Yes, this time we have Laurențiu Zmău on drums, and the other members are Adrian Flautistu on bass and Liviu Negru on guitar. Laurențiu Zmău brings a different approach to our group, and we are happy to have him with us.

Regarding your work, I noticed that you have a project that has been very successful, with many performances already, called The Merry-Go-Round. What's new about it lately?

There are children who already know our songs and come to these concerts and shows, The Merry-Go-Round, most of which we have performed at the Comic Opera for Children, but we have also been invited to various festivals to perform for children.

Are you preparing any new albums or concepts?

In the following period, we will release a new set of songs with The Merry-Go-Round in December, songs for children, and next year we are also working on a CD with all the songs from The Merry-Go-Round's repertoire.
