Interview with jazz vocalist Sorina Rotaru
Sorina Rotaru will hold a concert in Bucharest next Tuesday, at ARCUB, Gabroveni Hall. With this occasion, the soloist will launch a concept of premium events. What it's all about will tell us Sorina Rotaru herself, who is on the line with us. Welcome, it's good to have you here on Radio România Muzical.
Good morning. Thank you so much for inviting me. I'm truly honoured to meet you in the context of these interviews.
Tell us a couple of things about the concept you have prepared for next week. From what I understand, an entire series of concerts will be inaugurated this time around.
Yes, it's true. The series is called Jazz Essentials and I propose to explore the stylistic richness of this musical genre, jazz, in a frame with video projections, with sensory scenography, with dance, all becoming part of the music and the score. On March 24th there will be the first concert in this series, it will be a special one, because I will take the stage with exceptional artists, pianist Alexandru Olteanu, double bassist Adrian Flautistu, drummer Anthony Gutierrez and our special guest, saxophonist Cătălin Milea. As I said, the atmosphere will also be completed by dancing, because we have the artists from Jazz Roots Bucharest with us and we will all be enveloped in a visual, immersive setting, in a hall that is very dear to me, the ARCUB hall.
This decor is what you called sensory scenography.
Yes, It was done by Mihai and Răzvan from H3 and there will be a couple of key pieces that we have chosen together, illustrated visually.
As far as the repertoire goes I suppose there will be well known jazz standards, do you also have surprises in the program?
The repertoire is a journey through The Great American Songbook, with compositions that were written especially for the big screen, for the Broadway stage, by composers like George Gershwin, Irving Berlin or Cole Porter. I can give you some highlights of the evening. There are songs like I Got Rhythm, Puttin' on the Ritz, My Shining Hour and maybe some even less well-known ones. I plan to organize the concerts about once every two to three months.
Your next concert will be in a smaller format, in a very attractive place, if you could reveal to us some information about this event.
The next concert will be on March 29th, at the wonderful Ghica Victoriei Palace. I will perform together with Alexandru Olteanu again this time and also together with him I had the joy of opening the jazz concert series at the palace in February. I can say that I can't wait to meet the audience again in this exceptional and fairytale decor.
You already have two albums from what I remember, are you preparing something new in the near future?
Yes, I really wish for a duet album, because I have performed a lot in this format with Alexandru Olteanu, as in we have over 10 years of performing together and I hope that we'll have something concrete by autumn. After these two concerts I will also go back to my organisational activity and I will be working on a national tour that will take place in autumn.
