Interview with director Alexandru Nagy

Thursday, 7 December 2023 , ora 10.08

When we are going to celebrate Great Union Day on Friday, the Bucharest National Opera House invites the melomaniac audiences to an extraordinary concert by Alexandru Nagy. The young artist is going to tell us how this event is going to unfold in an interview with our colleague, IoanaȚintea.

The extraordinary concert dedicated to the Great Union Day will bring together on-stage well-known soloists from the lyrical stage and young artists from the Experimental Studio in Musical Performance Arts "LudovicSpiess". How is this dialogue between generations going to unfold?

For this year, we came up with the idea of creating a special event which mostly has the mission of creating a bond between generations, because opera is a genre which values tradition, and the current soloists - whom we have so much to learn from. We considered the Great Union Day an ideal moment to put together a complex event in which to take part well-known soloists from the lyrical stage, as well as beginners. And there is nothing better for a beginner soloist than a piano concert on the Opera House's big stage. It's a courageous start and we wish for it to be auspicious, because for a repertory theatre like the National Opera House (as I like to call it, the biggest show factory in Romania, because every day, there are hundreds of people who work there to plan a show). It is always important for such an enormous institution to accept young artists.A familial atmosphere emerges, and the practice of singing is taught between generations. Today's young lyrical artists need practice. They need to practice, to be present in that atmosphere - it takes them a year and a half, two years to get to know all the employees, all the corners, because it is a very big building. Therefore, they need accommodation, polishing. This polishing is very important and can actually be crucial in a young artist's destiny. If made correctly, in such an important institution as the National Opera House is, their chances can only grow higher and higher.

How is the national spirit reflected in the directorial concept created/imagined for this event?

We wish to make a compilation of the most important composers. It's an exclusively arias and lied recital with Romanian creations. It's a programme through which we also want to bond the Romanian creations with our audience and the young artists. Hence, the Union of Composers and Musicologists from Romania is the co-maker of this event. It is a Romanian as well as an international event meaning to pay tribute to those who offered us the opportunity to be a part of the universal history of music through their absolutely unique creations, which will be performed at the concert on the 1st of December.

It is the only concert with free entry and it is very important. It is a great opportunity for those who have never been to the Opera House to do so, with us, the well-known soloists of the Opera House, as well as the young members of the Experimental Studio.
